Our Research Centres are differentiated by being focused on moving understanding and practice beyond the limited capabilities of first generation knowledge management. We are dedicated to helping companies find viable and profitable pathways to next-generation knowledge enterprise. We are future-focused as opposed to looking in the rear view mirror. At the same time we are attentive and attuned to the timeless dimensions of the human experience and wisdom.

Knowledge-Based Business Design Research Centre

We have been developing new thoughtful frameworks for constructing the knowledge-based business. The intellectual tools we have developed form together a heuristic device for imagining future possibilities and scenarios. We have isolated 15 components which any self-respecting knowledge-based business should be built with. Just as any building has to have key components, a foundation, windows, doors, framing, plumbing and so on. Similarly, any knowledge-based business has to have what we refer to as the 15 C`s, which in our view include:
models for the business concept, customer, commerce, community, content, communications, coordination, computerization, context, complexity, collaboration, connections, change, cognition, culture.

Within each model we have isolated known patterns which represent options on a choice-board which the business strategist can examine. To our way of thinking this is a much smarter and more intelligent way of developing a coherent blueprint for the successful knowledge-based business. Our approach is also more ecological than mechanical. It  also provides a powerful tool for rapidly deconstructing the business model of an existing knowledge oriented business and finding its flaws. This is also a complement and companion to our knowledge pattern recognition playbook. Attend a KiKM seminar on this hot topic to gain a competitive advantage or host a seminar at your organization

Knowledge Pattern Recognition Research Centre

Our continuously improving knowledge of  the patterns above, from the  Computer Microchip, the Human Genome, the DNA Double Helix, Nanotechnology, and Satellite Imagery,  will play a growing role in our lives going forward. We live and work increasingly in a knowledge-driven economy. But what about the patterns that relate to knowledge itself ?

We believe that the ability to identify, interpret, imagine, intuit, instruct and intervene, using Knowledge Pattern Recognition, is a fundamental competency for achieving success in the knowledge game. We have therefore been carrying out independent research into the collation and understanding of winning knowledge patterns for some time.

We now have developed a toolkit to support our:  Knowledge Assessment & Strategy Consulting Services. In providing this service we are able to offer our clients rapid, cost efficient, strategic auditing and assessment of their organization`s knowledge capabilities, knowledge gaps, and level of readiness for transformation to a more knowledge driven enterprise.

Our work is based on combining  timeless principles and simple common sense, with next-generation advanced knowledge pattern concepts. Fluency and Agility with Knowledge Pattern Recognition capabilities can ultimately be highly Profitable.

The Enterprise Ideas Economy Research Centre

Our Question is - why are we not paying more critical attention to the Economy of Ideas in the firm? At KiKM we have been evolving the view that one of the best ways we can introduce complex knowledge management methods and technologies is through the lens of the simple Idea. Ideas are universal. Everybody can relate to ideas. It`s easy to see and understand how ideas can be useful for innovation and productivity. Our whole civilization rests on coming up with ever better recipes and better ways of doing things.

This KiKM Research Centre is dedicated to advancing Insight into how Ideas can be optimally harnessed within the Enterprise. In today`s knowledge-based economy, Ideas are indeed the new currency. Ideas matter. Ideas are with us every minute. Even in our dreams we have ideas. They are an integral aspect of the human experience. Ideas are a wonderful amalgam of concepts and intuitions. They can be simple yet complex. Ideas are our greatest asset. Everyone has ideas. Whether in large economies or small, great ideas can generate immense new value creation and wealth.  There is a de-facto marketplace for ideas within the enterprise. There are buyers and sellers, demand and supply for good ideas. There are idea merchants and brokers, and trust agents. Ideas can circulate freely or they can be encumbered. There is a payoff for good ideas.

And major risks for bad ideas. There is damage done daily from people who have no idea what they are really doing. The quality of ideas can be high or low. The cost can be cheap or expensive. The time it takes to implement a new idea can be short or long. Ideas may be protected or vulnerable. They may be nurtured in idea friendly conditions or not. There is a process here and it can surely be improved upon. There is much we do not fully understand about it`s dynamics.

We have poor metrics for directly measuring idea effectiveness. It is mind-boggling to us then, that given the importance of ideas for the enterprise, even more specific focus has not been put into thinking about how we can better harness, exchange, protect, collaborate, disseminate, apply, leverage, and market ideas within the enterprise ideas economy. So this Research Centre is  a Think-Tank for the study of the best Ideas About Ideas. The best ideas about how to improve the flow and value of ideas in the Enterprise Ideas Marketplace.

Knowledge Enabling Software

KM does not come shrink-wrapped in a box.  Yet almost all serious innovation today is increasingly enabled by software tools which we can think of as tools with `congealed process smarts`.  Like any competent carpenter we need to have in our tool chest, a variety of tools we can use to help us deliver precise and efficient results.  Smarter tools, used skillfully in the appropriate context , can really move us ahead. In a knowledge-based economy, understanding what software tools can be harnessed to leverage the knowledge resource, can be of tremendous value. Especially if you have a context, in which you take full advantage of this knowledge.
Our ongoing research, education, and consulting practice, in this area provides :

  • An introduction to the fast emerging market-space for knowledge enabling software
  • An opportunity for serious learning acceleration
  • A comprehensive taxonomy with which to better make sense of the various emerging classes of software
  • An intelligent segmentation of the developing market for knowledge management tools
  • A catalogue of competitive software resources and capabilities
  • A wake-up call to new products that ought to be now on your radar screen
  • A map to the wealth of intelligent new software for managing knowledge, intellectual capital and intangible assets
  • A source of software tools for knowledge innovation, which is very thought provoking. It`s can be insightful to see what intelligence developers are codifying and congealing in software enablers.

The knowledge based economy is fast becoming a reality. Globalization, increasing computing power, higher bandwidth, and the Internet revolution are some of the underlying forces enabling this expansion. Organizations of all types and sizes have to now continuously ask the central question - how do we become a knowledge based organization ? However to become a knowledge based organization you have to embrace a knowledge based business model. How does a company become a successful knowledge driven organization ? How can it develop, morph, evolve and thrive as a knowledge fueled enterprise ?
Key Topics we will explore: mental models, attitudes, knowledge business models, knowledge mapping, knowledge pattern recognition, running scenarios and simulations, knowledge strategy, knowledge enabling technology platforms, leveraging the e-knowledge market idea, harnessing intellectual capital, infrastructural capital, and customer capital, people, processes, technology, case histories, e-business, e-learning, community, measurement, new valuation and measurements, seeking the killer application, launching learning adapting and sustaining growth.

This seminar is designed for entrepreneurs, business leaders, CEO`s, CFO`s, CIO`s, CKO`s , knowledge managers, business architects and strategists, and other interested executives.  It is also ideal for teams of business leaders who are looking for innovative insights, creative direction, powerful methodologies and frameworks, and new thinking to help them power up their knowledge based enterprises.

The Knowledge revolution being unleashed by the recent mapping of the human genome, is a potent indicator of the powerful way knowledge is unlocking new pathways to solving human problems. The spread of foot and mouth and mad cow disease is a yet a useful reminder of how ignorant we still are of many things and how connected we all potentially are. This seminar provides you with an opportunity to step away from running on the current business treadmill. It helps you to reflect on how effectively your organization is addressing the central question of  how do we build a powerful knowledge based business ? And are we doing it thoroughly enough, fast enough, and deeply enough to yield enduring and sustainable knowledge performance well into the future ? You are exposed to independent, advanced, new thinking in knowledge management. This will help you to better understand, interpret, adapt and respond, to the challenges emerging from the growth and spread of the global knowledge based economy.

We explore what it means to be a knowledge worker in the new economy. It is a one day reflection on the special challenges of being a high performance knowledge worker. It is a lively and stimulating combination of presentation, dialogue, knowledge sharing and scenarios aimed at producing greater clarity, insight, and wisdom about the new role and challenges facing knowledge workers. The global knowledge based economy continues to evolve and expand at a rapid rate. As this happens, the nature of work is changing. It is becoming more and more knowledge intensive. Knowledge workers need to know more, to do their jobs effectively. Work life is becoming more complex and chaotic. Knowledge workers are challenged to make business decisions and take positive action in a whirlwind of information noise and pollution. Information overload or information famine, data smog, messaging and communication technologies such as e-mail and voice mail just add to the rising problem of knowledge worker stress. As human capital inputs to business production processes, what they know, and how they act on what they know, is arguably one of the key sources of sustainable competitive advantage. The knowledge worker is a critical link in the knowledge value chain. The knowledge worker is a vital resource for nurturing loyal and enduring relationships with important customers. The knowledge worker is not just an expense item on the balance sheet as in industrial age metrics, but an investment in a firm`s intellectual capital and brain power. People are indeed a company`s greatest asset. However human capital assets go home every night and voluntarily come back in the morning, carrying what they know. Much of this knowledge and intellect is in the form of hard to articulate tacit knowledge and experience. Corporations have to create environments for knowledge workers that elicit their passion and commitment. Management needs to truly honour and value what they contribute. They need to support informal communities of knowledge workers that collaborate and learn together.

What does it mean to be a ``Knowledge Worker``?

  • How can you Manage Knowledge better in your work-place and why does this matter today?
  • What Is Knowledge? How does it differ from data and information?
  • What`s involved in Harnessing Knowledge to improve your personal effectiveness and productivity?
  • Continuous Learning is increasingly important as is the ability to unlearn . How can this be done more effectively?
  • How can your Time To New Knowledge be reduced?
  • Using knowledge for Sense-Making. How can you master change, by making more sense of changes in the work environment ? How can you help your company intercept and interpret signals from the market-place ?
  • In what way is your work becoming more knowledge intensive ?What are some winning Coping Strategies for dealing with this development ? How can you deal with infoglut and infofamine ?
  • Why Knowledge Sharing And Exchange is more appropriate than hoarding in this era
  • How you can increase your Knowledge Value to the enterprise by improving the way you think, by becoming more creative, by getting to know customers better, by harnessing good ideas, by helping your company to become more innovative by leveraging your networks
  • How you can improve your own Knowledge Competency by identifying gaps, making maps, setting knowledge goals, expanding knowledge relationships
  • An examination of The Politics Of Knowledge in organizations
  • How can the Flow Of Knowledge be enhanced in your work environment, since movement is key
  • How can you more effectively participate in leveraging knowledge residing in Communities Of Interest & Communities Of Practice?
  • What are some of the strategies you can use to gain Access to Knowledge when you need it?
  • How can you use knowledge to make better quality Decisions?
  • How can knowledge support sustainable Development and Growth ,for you and your company?
