Videotape Mastering
The beginning of any dub master should have 60 to 75-seconds of color bars and audio tone that are referenced to the program material for videotape mastering. Accurate color bars are generated and timed to the system that the master was recorded on. Color bars are important to ensure the best possible hue and color saturation on your copies, while accurate audio tone allows us to calibrate the proper recording volume to achieve optimum clarity of sound during videotape mastering. Following the bars and tone, you should have a slate for 10-seconds. The slate should include:
Program title and Version or ISCI Code
Audio configuration (split, mixed, mono, channel 1 only, stereo, etc.)
Total running time of program
Date of production or revision
A minimum of 10 to 15-seconds of black should follow the slate as a lead-in to the program for videotape mastering. No countdown leader! This is slightly longer than the broadcast standard to allow the duplication technician ample time to lock-up and roll the recording machines.
A minimum of 60-seconds of black should follow your program. The master and its case should always be labeled with Title, Running Time, Audio Configuration, Date of Production and Contact Information. Preferred Master Formats for videotape mastering: Beta-SP, Digital Beta, DVCAM, DV or Mini-DV, DVC-PRO, Digital ``S``, 1-inch, 3/4-inch, 8mm & Hi 8mm, VHS & SVHS.
DVD Mastering
DVD-R or DVD+R or a non protected DVD-5 is acceptable for DVD mastering. Any DVD that contains the symbol RW is not acceptable for DVD mastering. However, DVD-9/10`s & DLTs may be used for DVD mastering when appropriate. Always use a brand name high quality DVD+/-R when outputting your master DVD duplication disc. Do NOT include anything on a DVD master, including color bars & tone unless you want them to be visible on the final copies. If we are mastering your DVDs from a videotape master, simply follow the master guidelines for videotape submissions for DVD mastering.
CD Mastering
For CD mastering, CD masters fall into two general categories: audio & data. Any CD that contains the symbol RW is not acceptable for CD mastering. If your master is a video CD or a hybrid CD, please call this to our attention. Never send a CD master with anti-copy protection on it for CD mastering. Your copies will be un-useable. Whatever is on your master will be transferred exactly to your copies. Interactive CD-ROM`s should be checked out thoroughly as any authoring flaws will transfer to all copies during CD mastering.
