Prepress Solutions for Color Proofing, DTP, PostScript, PDF

CGS (Computer Graphic Systems) Publishing Technologies International GmbH, Hainburg, Germany, was founded in 1985 with the aim of developing a page assembly system (Digi-Design) for designing magazine and catalogue pages directly on a computer. It is now a world leader in color proofing, productivity and production systems for the professional graphics arts market.

At a very early date, CGS recognized the trend towards low-cost PC global prepress solutions. ORIS software - well-established on VAX and Alpha systems -- was therefore ported to Windows NT. CGS has been selling the software based on this platform worldwide since 1997.

The ORIS software meets with excellent acceptance. For many customers, the ORIS Color Tuner, ORIS Certified Proof, ORIS Works and ORIS PDF Tuner programs have become indispensable for the production of catalogues, ads, magazines, color proofing, and small print jobs. The ORIS software family is constantly being enhanced.

Headquartered near Frankfurt, CGS has operations in the US and Canada and sales partners in all major countries. There are installations in Japan, China and India. The customer support center is based in Hainburg, Germany. CGS can be reached at any time thanks to the use of modern technologies such as e-mail and the Internet.

Image manipulations require a high level of performance. CGS therefore decided to use Digital Equipment Corporation's powerful 32-bit VAX computers. The VMS cluster technology provided for a convenient and extremely efficient interconnection of several workplaces.

Images and layouts were recorded with a camera (RGB). Page assembly with headlines, vignettes and images were done on-screen. Text areas were created using dummy text. Like today, inkjet printers were used to print copies of a layout.

The data was further processed on traditional page make-up systems. For data transfer CGS developed interfaces to Scitex, Hell-Chromacom, Crosfield and Screen systems.

Repro functions (CMYK) were eventually added to the page assembly functionality of Digi-Design. In 1991, CGS developed an online interface to the Screen scanner-recorder family 7X7 and introduced a stand-alone CEPS under the name ORIS (Open Reproduction on Industrial Standard). Due to the high performance of Alpha computers and its efficient algorithms, ORIS software offered unparalleled speed and productivity during interactive work and final page calculations.

Today, CGS` original founders -- all still going strong -- work with a powerful and efficient team which has since grown to include 35 members.

ORIS Global Proofing

ORIS Global Proofing from CGS provides cost-effective remote contract proofs, quality certification, electronic markup and more. Today's publishing and print production environments are increasingly global in nature. Projects often involve multiple decision makers, at widely scattered locations around the world, with ever-tightening deadlines. Contract color proofing and review must not only be accurate; they also must be nearly instantaneous.

ORIS Global Proofing is designed to make multi-site contract color proofing and review fast and dependable -- without requiring advanced color expertise at each site. Here is a brief overview of the individual components:

  • ORIS Color Tuner is the world's premier contract color proofing system for high-performance inkjet devices. Winner of the 2003 GATF InterTech Award, Version 5 includes a unique AutoCalTM process that allows multiple devices -- in multiple locations, worldwide -- to be automatically aligned to a common state, without the need for subjective, costly color expertise. Advanced ORIS Color Tuner features, such as precise spot color matching, can be centrally controlled.
  • ORIS Certified Proof provides simple, effective quality control for proofs generated at any location. Using a provided measurement device, anyone can scan a standard target on each proof, while the software performs a ``pass/fail`` analysis, based on SWOP, FOGRA or other specifications.
  • ORIS Color Markup combines the reliability of hard copy contract proofing with the speed and flexibility of digital annotation. Using patent pending technology from Prolatus, the user uses a digitizing tablet to create an annotated PDF version of the proof, which can be quickly transmitted to a service provider for immediate action.
  • With ORIS Global Proofing, soft proofing is a convenient option for off-site viewing and review. Color-accurate bitmap files are generated by the same high-end process that creates the contract ORIS Proof, which is then placed in a PDF file for annotation in Adobe Acrobat using an ORIS-certified color display also guarantees that the soft proof will match the final printed result.

ORIS Certified Proof is an easy-to-use system for verifying and tracking proof quality. It can be used for any proof, no matter which system or software was used to create it. It also allows users to define their company's color bars and quality standard. To specify the target values the user can simply load an ICC profile.

Measuring the proofing bar with the GretagMacbeth Eye-One is done in seconds. ORIS Certified Proof checks the measurement data against the standard and automatically prints the result on a label. Signed off by the operator and affixed to the proof, the label certifies that the proof meets the quality standard. All measurements and results are stored for further analysis.

ORIS Color Tuner

ORIS Color Tuner is much more than an inkjet RIP. It is a complete proofing system, combining software, high-speed proofing technology and proofing-specific ink and paper. With the ORIS Digital Proofing System, you can create contract quality proofs on affordable inkjet devices.

ORIS Color Tuner was the first system to be SWOP-certified for Epson and Canon. ORIS Color Tuner's features include selective color correction (CMYK fine tuning) to adjust for inherent inkjet behavior, as well as automatic color matching and automatic printer calibration (AutoCal), so that anyone can linearize and calibrate any output device. Spot color and CMYK are handled separately, insuring maximum proof accuracy in commercial and packaging environments.

ORIS Color Tuner color correction capabilities greatly surpass the ICC profile technology standard of digital proofers. The convenient graphic user interface allows the selection of any color value desired. In order to monitor the color value, it is displayed as a tint. Two control boxes display the original and the corrected color. In addition, the corrected percentage values and the resulting color deviation are displayed in Delta-E.

ORIS Works

A complete automation toolbox for preflight, file conversion, color management, CTP, digital print and more, ORIS Works forms the basis for the start and continuation of document-related, automatic processes.

The underlying hotfolder principle assigns a workflow station in the form of a configurable application to a directory on your hard disk -- or to any directory in the network. All of the stations of a workflow can be linked in a chain using ORIS Works.

ORIS Works establishes the start, course and result of a workflow as well as result-controlled or name-related branches. The configuration of all workflow steps is carried out with ORIS Works under a uniform user interface. In addition to this, ORIS Works allows the assignment of nearly all PC applications to a hotfolder.

Oris PDF Tuner

Oris PDF Tuner: A complete prepress editing environment for PDF and PostScript files. Adobe's Portable Document Format (PDF) is rapidly becoming the ``standard`` for submitting files for print. However, as customer choices for PDF creation become more complex, the potential for costly errors increases.

ORIS PDF Tuner reduces operational costs and billing disputes resulting from improperly created PDF or PostScript files, or files that fail to RIP or print correctly. ORIS PDF Tuner supplies the user with comfortable page layout and image assembly, grids for page layout, composition of geometric elements with colors, vignettes, transparencies and soft edges. The image manipulation tool leaves nothing to be desired: scaling, rotating, mirroring, copying, perspective distortion.

ORIS PDF Tuner provides extensive text setting functionality. It allows setting of text in any paths including hyphenation and the definition of global and local style sheets. Of course hyphenation supports different languages within one document. Multi-column text is realized by linking several text areas. With ORIS PDF Tuner text areas may not only be colored as tint, the user can also insert color gradations or images to which, of course, you can apply transparencies or soft edges.

DTP Editing

When DTP pages have to be prepared for printing, any number of the following tasks need to be carried out:

  • OPI image replacement
  • Correction of cut-outs
  • Color correction and recoloring
  • Partial image modification
  • Retouching
  • Soft edges on cut-outs
  • Transparencies
  • Status corrections

  • Trapping of page elements
  • Export of final pages e.g. in TIFF/IT-P1 format

Compared to working with a MAC, these tasks can be performed considerably more efficiently with ORIS PDF Tuner as all corrections are made on the page using a single program. Retouching and image correction, transparencies, soft edges, shadows, texts, etc. can all be carried out with ORIS PDF Tuner

Routine tasks such as format conversion, OPI image replacement, proof output, trapping, and final page export are handled e.g. by ORIS Works as a batch job.

PDF Editing, PostScript Editing

The ORIS PDF Tuner Interpreter converts PDF and PostScript documents into the ORIS PDF Tuner data format. ORIS PDF Tuner uses its own format as there is no open format available which can store and export all layout features independent of their resolution. The transformation and representation of even complex pages on the monitor occurs within seconds. During this process the page which consists of images, geometric elements and text, is broken down completely into its individual components.

The ORIS PDF Tuner image manipulation features are designed for performing the tasks associated with catalogue production:

Trapping Conversion of PDF PostScript Documents to TIFF/IT-P1

PDF and PostScript data from an external source can rarely be sent directly to print. You need a proof, want to check the trapping or carry it out yourself and require TIFF/IT data for the gravure. You want to avoid running the PostScript data through another RIP for each output, during which errors can occur.

ORIS Works supplies you with the perfect solution.

During data import, conformity with the PostScript standard is checked, missing fonts and images are detected, and the pages with errors are e.g. written into a separate directory and recorded in a set of statistics.

You can display the pages on the monitor and check all of the details, e.g. trapping, and make corrections interactively. ORIS PDF Tuner also carries out automatic trapping of the entire page in addition to allowing interactive intervention. ORIS Works automatically converts PDF/PostScript documents to TIFF/IT-P1.

CT and linework can be checked on the screen and edited. For the creation of proofs, ORIS Works calculates a color-corrected TIFF/All in CT from the CT and linework file which can be output on a variety of printers, e.g. of the EPSON printer family, using ORIS Color Tuner.

Workflow

The use of ORIS Works automates the prepress workflow. A configurable Hotfolder take charge of routine jobs. The ORIS Works Hotfolder Manager applies user-defined functions to individual documents or directories. The function is described by an application program and a configuration file. Each processing step is written to a log file. A Hotfolder can be linked in a chain to automate multistage workflows. Branches within a workflow can also be created.

  • The screen representation of a Hotfolder is similar to that of the Windows NT Explorer
  • Color symbols clearly and constantly indicate the current document status
  • Repeat feature in case of errors
  • Save, ignore or delete problem files
  • Error handling for files which do not match the input criteria, i.e. document type or naming conventions
  • The priority of waiting documents can be changed at any time
  • Documents to be edited can be pulled into the Hotfolder window using ``drag and drop``
  • A variety of PC applications can be used in conjunction with ORIS Works. The format specifications for configuration files are part of the product package
  • The product includes a variety of predefined configuration files which can be tailored to the user's specific applications. A separate license is required for each of the ORIS features
  • Access to all data in the network
  • Processing of shortcuts
  • Processing of directory trees
  • Transfer of files based on document name and type
  • Hotfolder priority can be changed at any time

Computer to Plate Film

With the ORIS Works CTP software components it is possible to set up an efficient computer to plate/film workflow. ORIS Works CTP performs the following tasks:

Import of Documents in All Common Formats

  • PDF
  • PostScript
  • DCS
  • EPS
  • TIFF, TIFF/IT
  • Scitex HandShake
  • ORIS

ORIS Works CTP full support of the CopyDot format allows the integration of re-digitized advertisement films into the workflow.

Pre-Flight Check of PDF Documents: During this process, ORIS Works CTP checks if all fonts and high-res. images are available and if they comply with the PostScript standard.
Last Minute Corrections: All imported documents can be edited so that corrections are still possible immediately before setting.

Trapping

Trapping: Automatic trapping can be applied to all pages, making them ready for production.

Output of Reliable Flat PostScript Format

With Flat PostScript, the complex PostScript structures are reduced to two elements: CT, which contains all image information, and LW, which contains all high-res. elements such as text, etc. This format can be processed by all equipment capable of PostScript.

Sheet Assembly

Retail programs such as Preps by ScenicSoft are used for sheet assembly. ORIS Works CTP reduces all pages to low-res. EPS files so that the assembly program is not charged with large amounts of data. A soft proof is done by reading or plotting the sheet with ORIS Works CTP software. After the signature has been accepted, the low-res. EPS files are replaced by high-res. data during an OPI process.

Imagesetters

In this area, CGS works closely with the Screen company. ORIS Works CTP is the ideal complement to the NT version of the Harlequin RIP, i.e. the entire production phase is realized using a uniform operating system and a uniform computer platform.

Trapping of Page Elements

All pages created with ORIS PDF Tuner or produced through the interpretation of PDF/PostScript documents can be trapped.

  • Automatic trapping of the entire page during the export of final pages to Flat PostScript, TIFF/IT-P1 and Scitex CT/LW formats
  • Trapping on pixel basis to the background and between linework colors
  • Manual corrections are also possible
  • The trapping can be visualized by reading the linework data
  • The trap colors can be changed with the linework editor
  • Finetuning of the parameters for automatic trapping

Color Space Transformation

It often happens that advertisements appear in magazines which are produced using different printing processes. In order to achieve uniform color representation throughout, a color space transformation must be performed for each printing process.

By means of ICC profile technology, ORIS Color Tuner allows the color transformation of images and pages (TIFF) for their adjustment to different printing processes. The basic adjustment is made through ICC profiles. ORIS Color Tuner has sophisticated fine tuning tools which allow the subsequent fine adjustment for perfecting the transformation.

Format Conversion

ORIS is capable of converting a wide range of data formats during input and output. Data conversions can be influenced by additional parameters such as, e.g.

  • Resolution
  • Color space transformation
  • Soft edging of objects
  • Text frames dependent on background
  • Trapping

Input Formats PostScript, PDF, CopyDot (DCS), TIFF/IT-P1, TIFF, Scitex HandShake CT/LW

Output Format PostScript, Flat PostScript (CT/LW), TIFF/IT-P1, TIFF/All in CT, Scitex HandShake CT/LW, DCS 1, DCS 2

Data conversion is performed completely automatically with ORIS Works. Shira file conversion tools, e.g., can also be included in the workflow thus allowing practically all of the high-end CEP system formats to be included in the conversion process.

CopyDot Linework Files Control

ORIS PDF Tuner is one of the few programs in the area of DTP that allows the reading and manipulation of linework files.

  • Recoloring -- globally or in masked areas only, e.g. for the coloring of scanned black-and-white text
  • Retouching of pixels in airbrush or copy brush mode
  • Filling linework areas, e.g. coloration of comics and maps
  • Transparency for any linework color and for single color separations
  • Scaling, rotation and positioning

Modification of CopyDot Data

ORIS PDF Tuner imports CopyDot data (CMYK) in the DCS format, produced e.g. by ESKOFOT scanners. Internally, CopyDot data are treated like linework data, i.e., they can be modified using the linework editor. Of course, correcting individual dots would involve too much work, but it is possible to e.g. erase or recolor specific areas and to insert new prices, logos and other linework elements.

Hotfolder ORIS PPD

Using the ORIS PPD (PostScript Printer Driver) for the ORIS Color Tuner, the printer can be started directly from any Windows application. You can also configure a Hotfolder to automatically transfer the data to the printer. More than one Hotfolder can be set up with different configurations of data format, color correction table, resolution, etc. This enables the creation of highly variable outputs of various data formats with different color adjustments.

RIP and SHIP Jobs

ORIS Works is exactly suited for such tasks. PDF and PostScript documents are copied to a hot folder. File name patterns can be specified to select the files that will or will not be processed. Documents that are rejected or processed unsuccessfully are written to a log file and recorded in a statistics. Automatic modifications such as

  • Soft edges for all cut-outs
  • Color space transformations
  • RGB/CMYK conversion
  • Text frames that depend on the background
  • Trapping are defined by parameters.

Output can be made in various formats such as

  • TIFF/IT-P1
  • Flat PostScript
  • Scitex CT/LW

Each of these formats consists of only a continuous tone (CT) and linework (LW) component and, therefore, provides a high level of production reliability and predictable file sizes. Using FTP the data can be transferred directly to the target system. Of course, a ``branch`` to a proof printer (e.g. EPSON 9000) can be integrated in the workflow.

Digital Proof

The ORIS Color Tuner provides direct support for many printers. ORIS Color Tuner supports all Windows printers. Thus it is possible to achieve an optimum color matching for any Windows printers.

The ORIS Color Tuner allows you to create color-corrected TIFF pages from all imported documents and to print them with the final press print colors on many printers that accept TIFF data, e.g. IRIS.

PDF PostScript Proofing

PDF PostScript Proofing: Using the ORIS PDF Tuner demo version (which can be obtained from the Download Area) you can open any PDF and PostScript document and check it on the screen. ORIS automatically creates an overview of all images contained in the document and presents it either in the form of a ``gallery`` or as a file list. Thus you can easily check the image size and type (JPEG, RGB, CMYK).
